Today I had the opportunity to photograph the rare and endangered Ghost Orchid in the Fakahatchee Strand Preserve. It is rare enough to find one blooming but we were blessed with two. These particular specimens were not easily accessible for photographic purposes and it took a small level of creativity to finagle a shot.
The Ghost Orchid is much smaller than you might think when you look at the bloom. The bloom itself is just two to three inches in length and typically only flowers for 1 week per year. These orchids grow on specific trees and within the Fakahatchee and can only be pollinated by the Giant Sphinx Moth. I hope you enjoy these and expect to see some mysterious black and white images in the very near future.
